1st graders in Mrs. Bowling's class have had a busy week! They mixed their Art skills with their knowledge of nouns and created a "Noun Town"! They also celebrated good behavior with a popsicle party and practiced matching contractions with a little quiz quiz trade activity!

We will have our final Family Reading Night this Thursday at the Mountain Homeplace. We will be reading "Smoky Mountain Rose" a book about "when a rich feller from across the creek decides to throw a fancy party to find himself a wife, Rose's stepsisters, Annie and Liza Jane, start dreamin' about becoming his bride. Right and left, they're orderin' Rose around--not even thinkin' that Rose might like to go to the party herself. And on the night of the shindig, Rose finds herself left behind--until one of the hogs comes up to the fence and starts talkin' to her. As it turns out, that hog just happens to know a little bit o' magic..."
We will also have two crafts, Rose's (Cinderella's)dress and a miniature broom. Come join us for the fun!

We had a wonderful Family Reading Night last night with Mike Norris and Minnie Adkins. One participant even got to take home Minnie's carved rooster! Every child received a copy of "Mommy Goose Nursery Rhymes" and "Mommy Goose Ring Around the Moon".
We will have our Family Reading Night tonight at 6pm at the Mountain Homeplace! Author Mike Norris and Artist Minnie Adkins will be joining us! Every child will receive a copy of their book! This is open to all children in Johnson County!
Mrs. Sowards’ students read their weekly Wonders text Spiders and broke into groups where they completed a main idea Jamboard. ❤️🐾

1st graders in Mrs.Bowling's class had fun today practicing, adding in any order. Students would "shake and spill" their cup of ten counters, then reverse the equation.
We have a special visitors coming for our Family Reading Night this Thursday. Mike Norris will be reading from one of his books and will be preforming his music and Minnie Adkins will be carving her artwork. This is a truly great experience that is FREE to all Johnson County children. We do ask that you pre-register so that we know how many will be attending. All participants will receive a free book by author Mike Norris.

Both Minnie and Mike grew up in Eastern Kentucky which, like Johnson County, is part of Appalachia
Minnie Adkins has been carving wood since she was a child, she is one of America’s best-known folk artists. Among many honors, she has won the Folk Art Society of America Distinguished Artist Award, the Governor’s Award for the Arts, the Appalachian Treasure Award, and a South Arts Master Artist Fellowship. Her work is part of many permanent collections, including those of the Smithsonian Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Huntington Museum of Art, and the Kentucky Folk Art Center. She has illustrated four children’s books: Sonny the Monkey, Bright Blue Rooster, Mommy Goose: Rhymes from the Mountains, and Ring Around the Moon: Mommy Goose Rhymes, and lives near her birthplace in Isonville, Kentucky.
Mike Norris is a native of Eastern Kentucky, he writes and has recorded one album with the Raggedy Robin String Band and later recorded four albums of original music with the Americana group Billyblues. He has published four children’s books: Sonny the Monkey, Bright Blue Rooster, Mommy Goose: Rhymes from the Mountains, and Ring Around the Moon: Mommy Goose Rhymes. Norris received the 2022 Literary Award from Kentucky organization Arts Connect for poems and stories “that can be read again and again to reveal new levels of meaning and literary artistry.” He lives in Lexington with his wife, Carmen.
Mrs. Bowling's first graders had fun yesterday practicing their spelling and sight words during spelling studious.
Thank you to all who came out and participated in Family Story Hour! Ms. Christy Cook did an amazing job reading “That Book Woman” and giving a little lesson on the Stafford House and the original Pack Book Library. The Johnson County Public Library prepared a wonderful tic tac toe craft and provided ice cream followed by a tour of the Book Mobile! Every child received a copy of the book! Special thanks to Mrs. Belinda Meek and Amy Reed for assisting tonight!
