We are proud to announce that Porter Elementary Family Resource Center partnered with the Johnson County Extension Office and Unite to apply for a garden grant through the Whole Kids Foundation. This grant will provide $3,000 to start up a school garden. Only 2% of children eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables, and the typical elementary student receives just 3.4 hours of nutrition education per year. School gardens can make a difference. Every seed planted sprouts a new opportunity for kids to learn about healthy choices and develop healthier eating habits. We encourage our students to join the garden club and are seeking parent volunteers to assist in the garden’s success! We will begin construction of our raised garden beds in the next few weeks, so if anyone is interested in assisting with building these garden beds, please contact Erin Caudill in the Family Resource Center. We will also have a sign-up sheet at our Open House on August 10th! We are so excited to have this opportunity!
