April 3-7 Spring Break-NO SCHOOL
March 1, 2017
Dear Parents, Students, Faculty & Staff:
As we enter the month of March, we have many activities and events taking place.  I would like to remind you that our Calendar and Newsletter can also be found on our Porter Website. Just go to the Parents Section and choose “Newsletter/Calendar.”
We have started our Spring Cookie Dough Fundraiser now through March 6th.  Proceeds from the fundraiser go to help our school purchase instructional supplies, fund student field trips and educational assemblies, and provide other activities for our students at no cost.  In today’s economy, I think it’s imperative to offer school activities like this with little to no fees for students.  Please help us continue to provide these activities at no cost to students through our fundraiser.  At Porter Elementary, we want all students afforded the same opportunities.  If we work together, we can continue to do this!  So, when you sell as little as 10 or more Boxes of Pre-Portioned Cookie Dough, you are working with us to make sure allkids benefit. (And the cookies are deeelicious!)
We want to wish our CmPS team the best of luck as they compete at state at Kentucky Governor’s Cup on March 3rd.  Remember, we are NOTIN SCHOOL on Monday, March 13, 2017 for KY Governor’s Cup.   Also, we want to wish our 4th& 5th Grade Academic Team the best of luck in Regional Governor’s Cup scheduled for Saturday, March 4th at Highland Elementary.
SBDM Parent Nominations are due on March 17th with SBDM Parent Elections being held on Thursday, March 23 from 7:15-8:00AM and 2:45-6:00PM.  Any parent with a child enrolled at Porter or that will be enrolled next year is eligible to self-nominate.  The parent must be willing to attend six hours of training and attend monthly SBDM Council meetings.  Two parents will be elected to SBDM for a two year term.  Please contact PTO President Bailey Burke for further information.
This has been a strange winter!  We’ve had to use very few NTI Days so far.  However, you never know what March and even sometimes April can hold in Kentucky’s weather patterns.  I’ll keep you posted of any and all changes to our school calendar as soon as I know them.  For now, Spring Break is looking good for all scheduled days of April 3-7.  I appreciate the cooperation that our parents always give and support for ensuring our students are in school every day possible.  Remember, your child needs to be in school every day he/she is well enough to attend.  Please try to schedule appointments on days off or after school hours if possible. Our goal (and your child’s goal) is 95% or better daily attendance!
The end of the third nine-weeks is scheduled for March 3rd. Third Quarter Reports go home on March 8.  This year our students will be holding Student-Led Conferences on Thursday, March 23 from 3:30-6:00PM!  Private parent-teacher conferences must be scheduled at a different time with your child’s teacher, if needed.  March 23rd will be an opportunity for your child to share his/her learnings and accomplishments in his/her Student-Led Conference using their Leadership Data Notebooks at your scheduled time.  Please make an attempt to be at Porter with your child at his/her designated time. If you can’t make it, please make sure your teacher knows and then reschedules a time for you.
As we enter the final quarter of this school year, I encourage each student to work very hard and to his/her potential.  Just as our school has set achievement goals, we have asked that our students set academic goals as well to perform Proficient and/or Distinguished on the state assessments in all tested areas.  How students perform on these tests help to determine the needs of our students and our school. Remember, students take state mandated assessments within the last fourteen days of the school year.  The last day of school TENATIVELY is Thursday, May 11th but could still extend through that last week of May or even into the first full week of June pending the late winter-early spring weather.  While not likely to go that far into the month of May-early June, we never know whenOl’ Man Winter, spring floods, or other such problems, will impact school days.  Please do not schedule any appointments or trips for the month of May to ensure all students are present during this very important testing window for our students, teachers, school, and district. Our K-2 District Testing will likely be a week or two after returning from Spring Break.  Our 3-6 grade State testing will likely be toward the end of April and first week(s) of May.  Again, these are very TENTATIVE and moving targets based on the weather.
Both students and teachers are working extremely hard in the classroom every day that we have school.  Teachers are utilizing every day of instruction to ensure your child is prepared and have obtained the necessary skills to be successful both in the classroom and on assessments.  Please have your child in school every day!
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if we can help you in anyway, my door is always open.
Yours in education,
Sandra Music, Principal
